CEVA Logistics shows how sustainability and efficiency can go hand in hand. Together with Jungheinrich, the logistics centre was converted to lithium-ion technology – a step that not only increases efficiency and safety, but also makes an important contribution to the environment.
Challenges
- Realising sustainability goals: CEVA Logistics' corporate strategy aims to significantly reduce CO₂ emissions and promote environmental friendliness.
- Battery and charging infrastructure: The inefficient and time-consuming battery changing processes of the previous lead-acid technology called for a time-saving and safer alternative.
- Intensive use of the equipment: The continuous two-shift utilisation placed high demands on the reliability and availability of the vehicles.
- Smooth changeover: The integration of lithium-ion technology and adaptation of the employees' charging habits had to take place without disrupting ongoing operations.
Solutions
- Conversion to lithium-ion technology: Jungheinrich provided a fleet of more than 50 maintenance-free and fast-charging lithium-ion trucks, which significantly increases operational efficiency.
- Central charging infrastructure with power banks: Installation of 20 power banks directly connected to the 40,000 m² solar panels on the roof of the distribution centre – for a sustainable energy supply and optimised charging processes.
- Reduction of the vehicle fleet: Thanks to the high efficiency and flexibility of the lithium-ion vehicles, the fleet has been significantly reduced, saving space and costs in the long term.
- Flexible leasing model: The vehicles are provided via a flexible leasing concept. This allows CEVA to scale its fleet up and down as required.
Success
- Significant CO₂ reduction: By switching to lithium-ion batteries, CEVA Logistics was able to take a major step towards achieving its sustainability goals and significantly improve the CO₂ footprint of the Grobbendonk site.
- Optimised efficiency: The centralised charging infrastructure and the option of intermediate charging increases efficiency and enables continuous two-shift operation without interruptions.
- Gained space and better utilisation of space: The release of the old charging and changing station created space for other operational purposes, such as use by the technical department.
- Cost savings through smaller fleet: Thanks to the higher efficiency of the lithium-ion vehicles, the fleet could be reduced in size, resulting in lower operating costs.
- Sustainable energy supply: The integration of solar panels and power banks for power supply not only enabled “peak shaving”, but also a significant reduction in energy costs.
